The Forgetful Mirror

2017 Orhan Kemal Novel Prize

The Forgetful Mirror describes Nevşehir, a small Central Anatolian town, at the time of the Armenian massacres. Nevşehir is a settlement close to Yozgat and Kayseri where the massacre was extremely horrendous; here there was an Armenian community which would fill one church only and the Armenian population in the surrounding villages was also small.

Literalising the history of Cappadocia in different periods and its spatial and linguistic attributes,Gürsel Korat views the situation in Cappadocia in 1915 from a multicultural perspective. The characters in the Forgotten Mirror are powerful, colourful and convincing. The spirit of the era is felt in the background in the chain of hectic events narrated in the novel over a period of twelve days.
